The Dude’s High 5s: Favorite Movie Directors

I don’t have much much in the way of a preamble. There are some other directors out there that I am am loving, but need a bigger sample size. Joss Whedon, Duncan Jones, and Rian Johnson would fall into this category. Anyway, here are my favorite directors.

The Dude’s High 5s: 1 Hit Wonders

What the hell? Is it time for another musical High 5? I hate these things. Oh well, nothing to do but dive into it. Half of the songs that I love are pretty much 1 hit wonders. While these bands may have other good songs, they really only had one hit. So please spare me the defensive arguments if I touch a nerve. I understand, I too love the Sundays, Letters to Cleo, Better than Ezra, Cake, Chumbawumba, The Verve, Harvey Danger, The Toadies, Deep Blue Something, Fine Young Cannibals, Space Hog, and so on … ok, maybe not so much on the Chumbawuba. So without further adieu, may favorite 1 Hit Wonders.

The Dude’s High 5s: Supersoldier Squad

Happy belated Veteran’s day everyone. Its one of my favorite holidays. Even the most liberal of douchebags shut up and let the Military have their day. The armed forces have been great to my family and friends (and freedom) over the years. I’ve often said that I don’t have the right stuff to serve. I’m too much of an independent thinker and I don’t like absolute authority being lorded over me. However, if I did have to serve, this is the squad of folks I’d want around me.

New GTA V Trailer Drops. I am alone in my apathy.

First let me say that I know it me. I don’t care about this game one bit. Caffeine is stuck in the real world, so I am being called into service to regurgitate news.  Your challenge Omeganaughts, convince me this game isn’t going to just be a rehash of GTA IV.  Hit the jump for the video.

The Dude’s High 5s: Bond Movies

There’s a new Bond movie coming out at the week. You have no idea how much that tickles me. When I was a kid, TNT used to have the occasional “15 days of 007” and play them non stop for a fortnight. It was glorious. I’d watch them all over and over. To coincide with the release of Skyfall, I present to you all my favorite Bond Films. Please let me know what films in the series you all like. Of course if you’re not a fan of 007, please say why so I can Internet fight you in the most juvenile of fashions.

The Dude’s High 5s: Horror Movie Icons

Happy Halloween everyone. Hopefully most of you will be spending the day watching cheesy horror flicks and handing out candy to children dressed as various characters from pop culture. I will not be doing either. I despise horror movies and I live in a neighborhood where trick or treating is not popular. However I’m willing to put my prejudice aside to bring you my top 5 iconic horror movie characters. Also, side note, I know virtually nothing about these characters, I am just shoehorning this one in there because it is Halloween and it makes sense. Feel free to lambaste me all you want.

The Dude’s High 5s: Candy!

We’re a week out from Halloween. I’m doing this High 5 as a public service for adults out there. Get your shit together. There will be hoards of children outside your house dressed as ghouls, goblins, politicians, and ghosts. If you give them raisins or toothpaste or anything that isn’t candy, yummy, tooth decay enabling candy, you’re in for some trouble. So here’s my top 5 candy products that should always be given out for trick or treating.

The Dude’s High 5s: Spaceships

The thought of traveling through space scares the hell out of me.  Not many things do, but that is one of them.  To be immersed in the infinite blackness with no compass, putting all your trust in a computer that may or may not be correct is insanity.  Why would anyone do it?  Well, if I were forced into it, these are the spaceships that would make me feel slightly better about the whole ordeal.

WEEKEND OPEN BAR: dick in a box

[WEEKEND OPEN BAR: The one-stop ramble-about-anything weekend post at OL. Comment on the topic at hand. Tell us how drunk you are. Describe a comic you bought. This is your chance to bring the party.]

Once again our intrepid heroes are out there fighting the good fight.  So while Caff and Rendar are ingratiating themselves with the folks at Comicon, why don’t we have a chat.  Pull up a chair, its story time.

Death is all around you.  It will take you at some point.  When you are a child, you don’t know this.  Hell, if you did, you probably wouldn’t care all that much.  Death doesn’t have to be a bad thing.  It simply is a transition.  I’m sorry about getting all philosophical on you.  I always get this way around my birthday.  Also, I’ve had a few.  So, depending on when you read this, it may in fact be my birthday.  I suppose that’s true of any article I write.  Well, if its Saturday, October 13th, then feel free to send along your birthday well wishes (Cheap Pop).  I’m not going to tell you all how old I am as that may kill any cool vibes I may have garnered, however I will say that it is the one year anniversary of my 30th birthday.

Sorry for my digression, lets move on to this week’s Open Bar topic.  When did your childhood die?

Let me add a bit of perspective.  When you are a child, you have your perception of how the world works.  Specifically with you at the center, and everyone trying to please you like you’re Caligula.  However, in most cases, there is a world event that occurs that kind of snaps you out of this fantasy.  You start to see the world as a large organism that you are a part of rather than background noise.  As you slowly realize that if you disappeared, nothing would change on the large scale.  You then find yourself wondering what your place is in the world as opposed to wondering how the world would shape itself around you.  When you start to question your place in the world, your childhood is dead.

So, what global event killed your childhood?

The Dude’s High 5s: Cryptozoology

I’m phoning it in today.  I’ve had a busy week, I’ve been lacking sleep, and I’ve been straining to think of a good topic.  So I’m lobbing one in there.  Today I’m going to do my favorite urban legend creatures.  Bear in mind, I don’t believe in most of these … or probably any (with one exception), but the stories behind them are fascinating.
