Friday Brew Review – Brooklyn Summer Ale

Is it possible for something to be excellent and overrated?

I certainly think so. Even those entities worthy of high honors, fully deserving of the piling-on of accolades, can deified beyond reason. In the pop cultural realm, the perfect example is Michael Jackson – the dude could certainly sing and dance, but what type of person was he? Does having the sickest of moves overshadow the consequences of being the a legitimately sick person?   I’m inclined to say “No.”

But let’s steer away from the potentially-pedophilic pop icons of yesteryear. Instead, we can head to a more palatable subject. To be precise, we’ll gravitate towards the most palatable of all subjects.

Beer.

Living in Greater Boston, I’ve fully embraced my role as an acolyte of Sam Adams. These muthafuggahs are Skywalker-honorable, leading the way as the largest American-owned brewery while still putting out craft-quality products. As such, I’m often confused as to whether my allegiance stems from an insular perspective or an objective assessment. I hope it’s more of the latter, but fear it may bit a bit of the former.

What assuages this fear, however, is the fact that I don’t lose my mind over the Samuel Adams Summer Ale. While I certainly think it’s a wonderful drink,   many of my comrades sing it praises otherwise reserved for the Elysian Fields. Hell, I’ve even known some beer-drankers who stock up on Sam Summer while it’s available so that they can continue drinking it until the November expiration date. Again, I like it, but I don’t even think it’s Sam Adams’ best seasonal (if you’re wondering – that’d be Octoberfest).

Consequently, today’s Friday Brew Review is dedicated to stepping outside of comfort zones. Rather than imbibing a beer that I believe is excellent and overrated, I’ve opted to give another potable a chance. Today is all about Brooklyn Summer Ale.

‘Plot Device’ Is The Best Short-Film-Advertisement-Thing In A While.

Plot Device is both a nine-minute short film, and an advertisement to show off the editing prowess of Red Giant’s  Magic Bullet Suite 11. The film rips through a variety of genres, from noir to indie to sci-fi. It’s entertaining. My favorite part? The amazing use of lens flares everywhere in one segment. Take that, Abrams!

Check Out The First Two Minutes of The ‘BioShock Infinite’ E3 Demo.

The BioShock Infinite demo from E3 made many a journalist and blogger cream their pantaloons. The game cleaned up with 35 ‘Game of the Show’ awards. I dream of playing that demo, my fat little fingers giggling as I once again get my Levine-gland stroked. Until then, I’ll have to sate myself with the fact that on July 7, GTTV on Spike is running a 30 minute presentation of that.

Just to tease the tip-lips, they’ve released a 2 minute section of it.

Hit the jump to check it out.

‘Thor 2’ Confirmed for Summer of 2013, Without Kenneth Branagh. Fail.

I thought that Thor was a fun, vacuous journey through hammers and Gods and action sequences. Enough to be excited for a sequel a couple years done the road. Marvel confirmed the obvious today, officially announced a second movie was coming. Then they done and crushed my little heart, announced  Kenneth Branagh wouldn’t be returning.

International ‘Captain America’ Poster Features The Red Skull and Cap’s Boys.

After the sort of hogwash that I’ve seen this summer, I’m really looking forward to Captain America. The trailer for it that played prior to Transformers: American Freedom Fuck Yeah! was the best part of that movie going experience. Don’t let me down, Evans et al.

Hit the jump for a new international poster for the flick.

Transformers: Dark Side of the Xenophobic Sexist Pop Abortion.

As I drove home last night, my girlfriend wearily turned to me and asked if we could not see anymore sucky movies this summer. She is my co-pilot in my various adventures as I rocket into the goopy chasms of pop-culture suck. A fellow space monkey. I promised her yes, I wouldn’t bother her with such an endeavor.

She had crossed the Rubicon last night, watching Transformers: Dark of the Moon. A movie so utterly dreadful, xenophobic, sexist and frankly fucking boring that I last night bled myself and affixed leeches to my freshly shorn testicles. I felt infected. I had to purge.

Blizzard’s Secret Game ‘Titan’ Is Called A Casual MMO.

Every MMO dork knows about Blizzard’s next MMO code named Titan. I sit, quietly lusting for it. I’m  feigning for that shit. There’s been relatively little news about the project, but one analyst is predicting it to be a casual MMO. Yeah right.
