The Dude’s High 5s: Top 5 Most Important Comic Adaptations

In celebration of me attending my first ever Comic Con this weekend, I figured I may as well tie my High 5 into the category of comics.   Problem is, I’m a comic lackey.   I’m not out there discovering new comics; I’m not hip to the indy artists or things that have buzz.   When it comes to comics, I do what I’m told.   Oh I have to read Preacher, ok.   Oh, Planetary is awesome?   Sure I’ll read it.   I have to read Watchmen and Dark Knight Returns, ok, I’ll buy them.   So then how do I connect my shitty poser comic geek self to the world of the REAL comic geeks?   Through movies of course!

What I have here are my top 5 important comic movies.   Don’t agree?   Then come and argue the point with me at Boston Comicon.   I’ll be at the 5 & Dime Table both days.

The Dude’s High 5’s: Top 5 Musical Mash-ups

For those of you who may know me, you might be shocked to see that I am actually doing a musical High 5. I’m gonna let the rest of you OLers in on a little secret about the Dude. I don’t like music. That’s not to say I hate music. There are some songs I love, but I don’t actively seek out new sounds to expand my horizons like I will with other media. I can’t explain it very well. I think music is intimate, personal. Whereas a movie has 2 hours to win you over, books have a narrative that can drive the imagination, and a TV show has seasons, a song has to grab you and tell a story in minutes. This is probably why I like so few songs. So when I was introduced to the concept of mash-ups, I was perplexed. How could I possible like two songs thrown together when I didn’t really care for either song on their own. I’m not sure, but here they are, my top 5 music mash-ups.

The Dude’s High 5s: Top 5 Movie Character’s Death Scenes

Last week I took a pounding for hating on some classic movies.   Except the Hangover … seems most of the super intelligent OL crowd didn’t fall for that movie.   This week I want to move on to happier topics, like death.   What makes a good death scene?   Dying for ones beliefs and convictions?   Sure, that’ll do.   Giving some epic prose before sloughing off this mortal coil?   Sure, that’s a good one too.   I think that a great death scene has meaning.   This means that we have to care about the characters, no easy feat.   So here they are, my top 5 Death Scenes.

Just be warned, there are spoilers ahead for the following movies: Star Wars, LA Confidential, Saving Private Ryan, Blade Runner, and Highlander: End Game.

The Dude’s High 5s: Top 5 Movies I Hate Yet Everyone Else Loves

We all have movies that we hate yet everyone else we know seems to love.   Those movies that are brought up in conversation that we have to bite our tongue lest we incur the wrath of the public.   Well in today’s High 5 I’m taking a stand.   I encourage all of you to take a stand with me.   Yell from the rafters how much you hate a certain classic movie.   Or yell at me for hating these particular movies.

Mistborn is Getting a Video Game Prequel

I get that some of you may not know what Mistborn is.   That’s a crying shame.   If you are into the fantasy genre at all then Mistborn should be at the top of you queue.   A friend sent this press release to me knowing how much I love the series.   After he recently completed the first book we spoke at length about how well the novel and the world would translate to a video game.   Looks like he was correct when he assumed people were listening to our conversation.   Hit the jump for more.
