Warren Ellis Producing ‘Castlevania’ Animated Series Coming To Netflix, Will Be “Super Violent”

I, for one, am completely down with the idea of a “super violent” Castlevania animated series. I mean, Warren fucking Ellis is producing it. How about you?

US Gamer:

Netflix has announced that it has greenlit an original animated series based on Konami’s Castlevania. The animated series is being developed by Adventure Time producer Fred Seibert’s Frederator Studios, with writing from Warren Ellis, the comic book author behind Transmetropolitan, The Authority, Netwave, and Iron Man: Extremis. Castlevania will be produced by Adi Shankar, the guy behind the Punisher: Dirty Laundry and the Power/Rangers fanfilms that everyone loved for being grimdark, alongside Ellis, Seibert, and Kevin Kolde.

Shankar took to Facebook today to offer up a few more details about the project. The folks behind Castlevania have already blocked out two seasons, one in 2017 and a second in 2018.

“Castlevania is a Netflix Original Series with Season 1 launching in 2017 and Season 2 in 2018. Furthermore, I personally guarantee that it will end the streak and be the western world’s first good video game adaptation,” said Shankar.

The series will seemingly star a new Belmont, instead of the one of the existing versions.

“Inspired by the classic video game series, ‘Castlevania’ is a dark medieval fantasy following the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepe himself,” reads Netflix’ synopsis.
We knew about this more than a year ago via Shankar, but not that it was coming from Netflix.

“I’m producing a super violent Castlevania mini-series with my homies Fred Seibert and Kevin Klonde. It’s going to be dark, satirical, and after a decade of propaganda it will flip the vampire sub-genre on its head,” said Shankar back in August 2015 on Facebook.

For Warren Ellis, this represents years of effort. He was attached as the scriptwriter for a direct-to-DVD animated film based on Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse back in 2006. He had even blocked out a total of three films. The project never went anywhere and the site dedicated to the film simply stopped updating with any new information in 2009
