Shane Black Says Iron Man 3 Is Going To Be A Tom Clancy-Esque Thriller.

Iron Man 2 was fun. It was also forgettable, and it strove so hard to integrate into a larger universe than it ended up getting lost in its own cross-marketing bullshit. Recently named director and apparent writer of the third flick, Shane Black, addressed all of this at the Omaha Film Festival this past weekend.

Ain’t It Cool News:

He is scheduled to meet with Robert Downey Jr. this week when he returns to L.A. Downey will be contributing to the story and Shane will be writing it in addition to directing.

The studio was not happy with the direction Iron Man 2 took. Iron Man 3 will not be another “two men in iron suits fighting each other” film. Instead, it will be more like a Tom Clancy-thriller, with Iron Man fighting real world villians.

Iron Man 3 will be made after The Avengers and will not feature any other heroes from the Marvel Universe. Marvel is only doing crossover characters to lead up to The Avengers, and once that film is released, the plan is to go back to self-containted single-character stories.

I’m excited for the direction that Black wants to take the third movie. The second one tried to do far too much, and it ended up as a blasé  exercise in synergy and special effects. As I said, it wasn’t without its moments, but it certainly didn’t do anything for me in the long run. For Marvel to acknowledge that the second one was lacking is encouraging, though those fuck faces should admit it was because of their seemingly insatiable need to intertwine all of their franchises into one clunky universe.

Stripping back down the franchise to just Tony Stark, absolving the flick of having to deal with setting up the Avengers, and the involvement of Shane Black who has a rapport with RDJ are all steps in the right direction. I, for one, am optimistic that these motherfuckers can close out the trilogy with some solid entertainment.
