‘Episode IX’ News: Trevorrow wants to film in *actual* outer space
I was weary when I heard that Trevorrow was announced to be directing Episode IX, coming off his stint helming the abomination that is Jurassic World. But, I enjoyed his work on Safety Not Guaranteed, and I figured if the LucasCompound chose him there must be something to him. Now? Now the dude is talking about shooting on actual film, and wanting to film in actual outer space. I fuck with both these developments.
Star Wars: Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow has to be feeling some serious pressure. Sure, directing the final movie in the latest Star Wars trilogy is a huge opportunity, but how is he going to top The Force Awakens and whatever Rian Johnson cooks up for Episode VIII? How about filming his space opera inactual outer space?
Trevorrow recently took part in a Sundance panel with Christopher Nolan, and the two got to talking about the virtues of shooting movies on film, rather than digitally…
“Film tends to remind us of our memories, of our childhoods, the way we used to see films. I could never shoot Star Wars on anything but film because it’s a period film. It happened a long time ago!”
Trevorrow then dropped a bomb, saying he’s asked about filming in outer space. No, really.
“I asked the question, ‘Is it possible for us to shoot IMAX film in actual space for Star Wars, and I haven’t gotten an answer yet, but they’ve shot IMAX in space!’”
I’m not exactly sure what Trevorrow would shoot in outer space, but hey, we know Star Wars: Episode IX is guaranteed to make all the money in the world, so let him do whatever he wants. Send the guy up to the International Space Station and let him film floating Wookiees for a week. Hell, take it a step further and launch a new space station that looks like the Millennium Falcon – Disney can afford it.
