Monday Morning Commute: Refreshing Taste of Glass.

Here it is folks – the final push towards Christmas! In less than a week’s time, the Magic Bearded Arbiter will sneak into our homes and either reward us with gifts or punish us with lumps of fossil fuel. Hopefully the Bearded Arbiter wasn’t looking when you cheated on your taxes, ran a red light, or didn’t tip the waitress because she didn’t preemptively refill your coffee.

But chances’re are that your ass is busted. There’s no hiding from Santa. He sees you when you’re sleeping.

So on that note, welcome to the MONDAY MORNING COMMUTE! This is the spot where we meet up to discuss the various bits of entertainment we’ll be relying on to get us through the hellish gauntlet that is the workweek. However, most of us are probably going to be giving half-assed performances at our jobs this week, more interested in cakes and candies and parties than punching in from 9-5. With that being said, last-minute shopping and party-planning carry their own unique brands of stress, and we’ll still need something to get us through.

C’mon, fly down the chimney and I’ll show you what’ll be occupying my mind this week!

Suggestin’/Dreams with Sharp Teeth

This weekend I watched Dreams with Sharp Teeth, the 2008 documentary about the life and work of Harlan Ellison. This feature would be worth watching even if Ellison were a no-name janitor from Ontario, as his personality is so goddamn intriguing. The man is acerbic and thoughtful, forthright and mad as hell, critical of the present and hopeful for the future. Tack on the fact that Ellison is one of the most influential writers of speculative fiction in the last hundred years, and this movie becomes one of the best documentaries I’ve seen in years.

Whereas most documentaries use a hard slant when depicting their subjects, this is a case in which the truth is better than any fabrication could ever hope to be. Harlan Ellison is a mad genius science fiction writer who conversely marched with Martin Luther King, Jr. and got fired from Disney for doing an impression of the company’s characters in mid-coitus.

Hero status.

Watchin’/The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

I haven’t read the books. I haven’t seen the original movies. I’m not even sure what the premise is.

But I do know a few things related to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

David Fincher is one of my favorite directors. Trent Reznor is one of my favorite musicians. And Daniel Craig is a stud.

I’m sold.
