Microsoft files ‘Battletoads’ trademark, my childhood weeps happily

Microsoft has filed a trademark for Battletoads. According to the Web, of course. SURELY YOU JEST, CRUEL INTERNET? Don’t fuck around with me. I’m more than fucking ready to rock out to a modern, side-scrolling Toadtacular beat ’em up. So don’t play with my heart.

Crave Online:

Microsoft has allegedly filed a trademark for Battletoads, leading many to speculate that Rare could be creating a new entry in the notoriously difficult NES/SNES series.

The original Battletoads game has gone down in history as one of the most unforgiving games ever, and there have been frequent rumors regarding a potential revival of the series. Now those rumors may actually turn out to be true, as a NeoGAF user has posted details of a trademark allegedly filed by Microsoft, meaning that a new game could be coming to the Xbox One or Xbox 360.

Rare have experienced a decline in quality since their glory days with Nintendo back in the era of the SNES/N64, though considering they now work hand-in-hand with Microsoft (mostly producing Kinect games), they could be returning to one of their most famous series if this trademark is to be believed.

Granted, as it’s mentioned in the article, Rare sort of sucks these days. But who knows. Perhaps this is the delicious incantation that shall summon forth both childhood nostalgia, radical gameplay, and a Rare renaissance.
