‘Captain Marvel’ Trailer: Carol and Fury go full Buddy Comedy!

I’m worried about Captain Marvel, dude. Maybe it’s nothing. But like, I’m worried about its tone. Because, again, like, what exactly is its tone? From the trailers, it seems all over the goddamn place. Intergalactic epic. Buddy comedy. Captain America-esque? I’m, I’m not sure. I hope my concerns are misplaced.

AV Club:

Look, we all understand that in the age of every superhero movie getting like 16 different trailers, it’s hard to generate excitement for each new iteration of a two-minute commercial for your movie. But Marvel, calling a new Captain Marvel trailer a “special look” at the movie doesn’t make it not a trailer.

Besides, there’s more than enough here for us to savor without having to bend over backwards pretending this is some fancy new way to showcase the film. It’s just a new trailer—but whereas previous ones have emphasized Carol Danvers’ alien journey, or the character’s mysterious arrival on earth, this latest trailer makes the case that there’s potentially a pretty great buddy comedy waiting to be made featuring Brie Larson’s titular hero and Samuel Jackson’s younger and less jaded Nick Fury. There’s a few of the same shots we’ve seen of Captain Marvel flying around and using her powers (and, of course, punching the smiling old lady on the bus), but here the focus is more on the relation between Danvers and her S.H.I.E.L.D. interlocutor as he tries to understand just who the hell she is. She may have photon blast powers, but Fury is armed with salty comebacks aplenty.

Hopefully, we’ll get more of their mismatched-partners banter when Captain Marvel opens March 8.
