The Dude’s High 5s: Old School Cartoons

The Dude's High 5.

I used to love cartoons.  What happened?  Did I grow up?  Did I turn into a fun hating ogre?  I just think that most cartoons today suck. There’s a few here and there that I love (Venture Brothers, South Park), but for the most part, I don’t like them. My friends always joke that I never had a childhood.  They make assumptions that I was always the cynical dick that I present myself as.  Well, to throw a wrench in their plans, here are my favorite 5 cartoon shows from when I was a child.

5. Garfield & Friends

Garfield.

Garfield sucks.  It’s not funny. The fact that I loved this show reminds me that people, especially children, like things that suck.  I do not begrudge Jim Davis his life’s work; I do however question anyone that finds it funny (including my past self).

4. The Legend of Prince Valiant

Prince Valiant.

I was always a junkie for medieval weaponry, culture, and the like.  I loved old school sword and sorcery video games, pen and paper D&D, and fantasy novels.  The Legend of Prince Valiant wasn’t a nice addition to my insatiable lust for all things medieval.  It was also a bit different than my usual entertainment as it wasn’t a funny cartoon, but an adventure show.

3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

TMNT.

Everyone has their favorite turtle.  Mine was Donatello because he was a tech guy.  The movies killed the Turtles for me, but I have fond memories of the cartoon.

2. Looney Tunes

Looney Tunes.

If you like cartoons, and you don’t like the old school Looney Tunes, then you suck.

1. G.I. Joe

G.I. Joe.

Damn I wish I was a less destructive child.  I would have made bank off my toys.  I used to love the show because I loved the toys.  As a kid I loved two things, small fires and large fires.  I used to collect G.I. Joes as a kid.  That might not be the best way to put it.  I used to destroy G.I. Joes as a kid.  I would take them apart, mix and match them, light them on fire, poke holes in them, and all other manners of torture.

So what cartoons did/do you folks watch?
