‘The Mummy’ Trailer: An Impossible Mission By Any Other Name

Man. I like Tom Cruise. I like the Mission: Impossible movies. But if this trailer is any indication I’m pretty bummed that The Mummy has now just become another cookie-cutter Tom Cruise/Mission: Impossible jam.

UPROXX:

Universal has released the first trailer for The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise, Annabelle Wallis (Peaky Blinders), Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), Courtney B. Vance (American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson), and Sofia Boutella (Gazelle from Kingsman: The Secret Service) as the titular Mummy. The movie will even have a cameo from Russell Crowe, who will be playing Dr. Jekyll. No, really.

The Mummy is part of the Universal Monsters shared cinematic universe, so we’ll be getting the globally pugnacious Crowe as Dr. Jekyll, Johnny Depp as The Invisible Man, and maybe Javier Bardem as Frankenstein, among other big names in “I can’t believe they’re really making these” news.

Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.

From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.
