Well, this is an unexpected development. But, I dig it.

io9:

We’re a few weeks away from meeting the newest Marvel movie hero, Doctor Strange, and it seems the character got a last minute assist. The Hollywood Reporter says Dan Harmon, the co-creator of Rick and Morty, was called in to write some additional scenes after principal photography was finished.

Yes, the dreaded reshoot. But reshoots are built into the schedule of every Marvel movie exactly for this kind of thing: the filmmakers think something is needed to make the film better, so it’s added.

That means Harmon himself is the true “Strange” element here. He’s obviously a true talent and comedy genius, not only co-creating Rick and Morty but running a popular podcast and creating the NBC fan-favorite sitcom,Community. All that time, though, he’s almost exclusively worked in TV, and his subversive sensibilities seem a bit at odds with the Marvel way. Then again, Marvel is famous for taking chances on people, like Joss Whedon, Jon Favreau, the Russos, James Gunn, and others, all talented people who raised their games to a new level at Marvel.

You have to guess Harmon was brought in to add levity to a film that, from its trailers, looks pretty complex and heady.

Doctor Strange was co-written by the film’s director, Scott Derrickson, and his frequent collaborator Robert Cargill. There’s no word what, if any, credit Harmon will get on the film.

Marvel’s parent company Disney did not immediately return a request for comment as of press time.

Doctor Strange opens November 4.
