Square Enix announces ‘Dragon Quest XI: In Search of Departed Time’ for PS4, 3DS, and Nintendo NX

I don’t fuck with the Dragon Quest series. Like. At all. But maybe there’s someone who is unfortunate enough to frequent (ha!) or stumble across this site who does. So here! Have some DQXI news.

Uproxx:

This week, Square Enix finally took the wraps off the latest entry in their classic Dragon Questseries. The announcement of Dragon Quest XI may not be huge news in the West, but it’s a big deal in Japan, where Dragon Quest is a major phenomenon (they usually sell four to five million copies in that country alone).

The latest Dragon Quest will come in two forms, a handheld game for the 3DS and a fancy, Unreal Engine 4 version for the PS4, and (probably) the Nintendo NX. Here’s the precise wording about the possibility of a Nintendo NX release from Square Enix’s press release…

“Additionally, we are also considering launching on Nintendo’s in development NX platform.”

Nintendo revealed the existence of the Nintendo NX a few months back when they announced they’re getting into mobile gaming. Since that initial brief mention, Nintendo has been very stingy with additional details about the their new machine, although Square Enix says they’re aiming to release Dragon Quest XI in 2016, which could be a clue that the NX is arriving at around the same time.

As for the game itself, you can check out some off-screen footage of Dragon Quest XI above. Interestingly, the game looks almost like a Zelda-esque action-adventure, although there will still be traditional turn-based battles.
