Buy These Flippin Comics!!! (10.16.2013) – Wednesdays By Any Other Name

Wednesdays By Any Other Name.

The powers-that-be would have you believe that today is just a Wednesday, another school day.  Another workday.  Some jack-ass, somewhere around the world, right this very instant, is quoting that inane GEICO camel, asking every other poor sap that has the misfortune working with him if they know what day it is.  “What day is it, Leslie? “  “Mike, do you know what day it is?”  If that guy is in your office – coffee mug in hand, smug, all-too satisfied look plastered on his corporate sellout face, do me a favor.  Stand up and tell him what day it is.  Take your keyboard and unplug it from your PC.  Just as he rounds the corner to your cubicle and asks you if you know what day it is – you swing.  Swing HARD*.  Make sure plastic keys connect with bone.  Make sure coffee ruins khakis, and teeth spray like Skittles from a rainbow.  Stand over him, and wait for his eyes to focus again and meet your own. “I know what day it is, Kyle.  Wednesday is Comic Book Day!  Bitch.”  Hit the jump and lets talk comics, and you should probably get away from that d-bag Kyle before he calls the cops.

*Omega-Level does not condone the use of violence to let people know about comic book day, and suggests perhaps just handing out free/unwanted comics to co-workers and friends as a much healthier way of dealing with your issues.

Avengers #21.

New Avengers #11.

AVENGERS #21 & NEW AVENGERS #11 (INFINITY TIE-IN) – Marvel NOW

So we saw the rubber meet the road in Infinity #4 with Captain America making the biggest gamble in the war, and a Thor moment that MIGHT be one of my favorite Thor moments of all time.  The heat is on as Thanos’ son is revealed and the galaxy faces open war on the Builders.

Other favorite Thor Moment?

Thor's big moment.

Hawkeye #13.

Hawkguy #13 – Marvel NOW

Saga isn’t the only comic to take occasional breaks, as this friggin gem of a comic also has resting periods to make up for David Aja’s pace on art chores.  This is not a complaint!  Typically, I loathe frequent artist changes, especially mid-story arc, and when the collaborators work so well together (as Fraction and Aja do).  This book has seen a couple different artists on it so far, but all stellar, and all complementing Aja’s style.

So glad to have this book back, and I can’t wait to see how the book functions, rotating between the two Hawkeye’s (Clint & Kate) and artists (Aja for Clint, Annie Wu for Kate).

If you’re not on Team Hawkguy by now, you should be.  Best hero book on the stands.

Adventure Time - Fionna & Cake.

Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake TP – BOOM Studios

Confession time!  I like Fionna & Cake more than Finn & Jake.  There, I said it!  (That was a load off)

Amazing that this started out as gender-bent fanfic from one of the writers of the show, and blew up into an all out awesome spin-off.  Mathematical!

The Best American Comics 2013 – Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

The Best American Comics 2013 – Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

I love the Best American series – my favorites are usually the “Non-Required Reading,” “Science & Nature Writing,” or, of course, the “Comics” edition.  “BAC” usually has a stellar editor (or couple of editors) in the form of a famous comic artist/writer/cartoonist, and this year the collator of this year’s best is Jeff Smith, the creator of one of the great comic stories, Bone.  Contributors to this year’s volume include:  Paul Pope (Battling Boy), Kate Beaton (Hark! A Vagrant), Craig Thompson (Blankets), Brandon Graham (Prophet), and many others.  If those names aren’t enough to whet your whistle, I just don’t know how to help you!

That’s gonna do it for me this week, guys, but I KNOW there a few more things that are worth grabbing, so join in the fun and let them be known in the comments below.

Until next time!
