Supergirl’s Relaunch In The DC ‘New 52’ Is Working The ‘Hunger Games’ Crowd. I’m Interested.

USA Today has some artwork from this week’s Supergirl #1, along with an interview with the comic’s co-writers. They have an interesting bent on the Supergirl character. A character that I’ve never really been interested in, but after reading them talk about her?

I’m buyin’ at least the first issue.

USA Today:

“We’re really excited about the opportunity to hand this book to a female reader who is into things like  The  Hunger Games. This is a strong character with her own point of view,” says Johnson, whose new IDW  Star Trek  series also debuts Wednesday.

The creators also wanted Supergirl to look appropriate to a teenage reader. There’s a reason behind her new tights, which is teased in the first issue, and gone are older versions of the character wearing midriff-baring tops and short skirts.

“She’s pretty without being crass,” says Green, a former  Smallville  produer who’s now the showrunner of the upcoming  ABC  horror series  The River. “A lot of versions of Supergirl were sexy to the extreme, and we really wanted a real teenager – certainly an athletic build but nothing that is ridiculous to look at.”

I have my hesitations about comparing it to The Hunger Games for  one niggling reason: as much as she is marketed as one, I don’t really buy Katniss being an actual strong  character. You know, one that can handle falling in love without being reduced to a quivering pile of goo, or being an emotional cripple. Also  – they say she’s not sexy to the extreme…but she isn’t wearing any fucking pants.  Still though, I liked those books and I like the sentiment that they try to project and that is being carried over onto this series. Finally: The artwork by Mahmud Asrar  is fucking gorgeous.
