Monday Morning Commute: Scream Sayonara!

Ahoy! Welcome to the MONDAY MORNING COMMUTE – this is the spot where I share the bits of entertainment detritus that I’ll be rolling in over the course of the next few days! Sometimes it’s neat and tidy. Other times, it’s gross and ewh. In either case, after you stomp through my mind-muck, it’s your duty to hit up the comments section and detail what you’ll be up to.

Re-Readin’/Heavy Liquid (Paul Pope)

I’ve started re-reading Paul Pope’s Heavy Liquid in small, super-digestible bites and I must admit that it’s even better than I remember it. This is really saying something, since I’ve always had a soft spot for the comic. Pope tells the neo-noir tale of S, a man who not only stumbles into a vast amount of the ever-mysterious heavy liquid, but is also tasked with finding the only artist capable of sculpting it into Beauty. Mixing crime drama with futurism and psychedelia, Pope manages to convey a story about a man looking for his role in the world, whether through love or art or money or drugs or authenticity.

Watchin’/The All-Star Game

I’ll be the first to admit – I’ve yet to watch an entire baseball game this season. With that being said, I’m still planning on checking out some of the All-Star Game. As a completely emotionally uninvolved spectator, all I want to see is the game’s best talent being showcased to the Nth degree. I want filthy strikeouts and gravity-defying dingers! And as long as I get those, there’s no conceivable way I could be disappointed. Right?

Contemplatin’/Mic Todd’s Arrest

Coheed and Cambria have been one of my favorite bands for many moons now. While their last couple of albums didn’t hit me as hard as their first three, they’ve always maintained my interest and have kept me coming back for more. In fact, I was lucky enough to see them play all of The Second Stage Turbine Blade this past April, and it was an experience that made me more eager for new Coheed than I had been in years.

Unfortunately, news broke last night that bassist Mic Todd had been arrested for armed robbery. Allegedly, Todd robbed a pharmacy, telling the employees that he would detonate a bomb if they didn’t hand over bottles of Oxycontin. He then took a taxi cab to the venue Coheed was to play at, and was apprehended by the police shortly thereafter.

No matter how you slice it, this is a real shit situation. After nearly leaving the band in 2006 due to drug use, it had seemed as though Todd had gotten his shit together. But now the natural inference to make is that not only is he using again, he’s so desperate that he’s resorting to theft. While Coheed has promised to continue the tour, one has to wonder what this’ll mean for the band’s future.

So there you have it – a random assortment of shit that’ll keep me busy for (at least) a few days!

Now it’s your turn! Hit up the comments and give me some ideas!
