‘Northlanders’ Canceled By Vertigo. I Am A Sad Viking.
This is seven shades of bullshit smashed into a can of failure Motherfucking ‘Northlanders’ by Brian Wood and a litany of extremely talented artists such as Becky Cloonan has been nixed by Vertigo due to poor sales of the trades. I am awash in a raft of sadness, floating across a sea of hate. We’ve all failed guys. Failed.

Brian Wood has announced the cancellation of his Vertigo title Northlanders.
His comic set in the Viking Age will conclude in March 2012 with issue #50, the Demo writer revealed on his blog.
“It has a very loyal fanbase but the trade sales just aren’t cutting the mustard,” he said.
“I’m not going to eulogise the series yet and start thanking everyone, since I have the next nine or ten months to do that. While this news sucks, I consider it a triumph for everyone responsible that our depressing, often cerebral comic book about Vikings and history is lasting 50 issues.
“It feels appropriately epic, and the eventual seven volumes of the series will hopefully stay in print forever (or close to that).”
Wood said that he did not think that the cancellation was connected to the recent end of his exclusive contract with DC Comics.
“I was not given a role in the recent DCU reboot after all but I think it’s an exciting idea and wish everyone the best,” he added.
Sadness, again. I don’t understand economics, let alone the economics of something as complex as the comic book industry. So I’m not really qualified to comment on whether or not it is ludicrous to can the title. A comic which I feel is, you know, exceptional. I’m going to anyways! Ha, ha! Take that. No, seriously. It’s a shame that something as monolithic as DC (who owns Vertigo) can’t take a loss on a title like Northlanders and/or do something as audacious as push it publicity wise. As the Flashpoint titles seemingly double in number weekly, such a quite but excellent book like this falling by the wayside bums me straight the fuck out.
It should serve as a wake-up call everyone. The titles you love aren’t going to be around if there isn’t support for them. Push them onto others! Whore our your love for them. I tried to pimp Northlanders every month in Variant Covers, but alas all three people who read it weren’t enough to salvage the pig. Hug your favorite issue and drink some mead. This shit is a sizable loss.
