Ralph Macchio is starring in a Karate Kid sequel for YouTube Red. This is a sentence that even ten years ago would have been unfathomable. But, here we are, in the future. Reality star for president, YouTube shows, and Karate Kid resurrection.

Three decades later, Johnny Lawrence will get another chance to sweep the leg in a television sequel to The Karate Kid,featuring original stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the subscription service YouTube Red has ordered 10 episodes of the half-hour comedy, titled Cobra Kai, set more than 30 years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament depicted in Karate Kid. Johnny Lawrence (Zabka), now down on his luck, has decided to reopen the Cobra Kai dojo, reigniting his rivalry with the successful Daniel LaRusso (Macchio), who’s struggled to maintain balance in his life without the guidance of Mr. Miyagi (the late Pat Morita).

The project hails from Will Smith’s Sony Pictures Television Studios-based Overbrook Entertainment. Josh Heald (Hot Tub Time Machine) and Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (Harold and Kumar) will write and executive produce Cobra Kai. Macchio and Zabka are also on board as executive producers.

Released in 1984, The Karate Kid told the story of high-school senior Daniel LaRusso, who moves with his mother from New Jersey to Los Angeles, where he almost immediately comes into conflict with Johnny, the top student at the unscrupulous Cobra Kai dojo, and his gang. Under the tutelage of their apartment complex’s eccentric maintenance man Mr. Miyagi, Daniel learns about karate, and life, and ultimately faces and defeats Johnny in the All Valley Karate Tournament. The film inspired three sequels and a remake.

Cobra Kai is expected to debut in 2018 on YouTube Red.
