‘The Witcher’ series has sold 20 Million f**king copies; devs working on new 2016 project

The Witcher 3.

Yeah, I’m really hype that The Witcher series is selling like hot cakes. Why, if I’ve never really enjoyed them (more out of a lack of commitment to another life-ruining game like Fallout 4)? Cause I want CD Projekt to ruin my life with Cyberpunk 2077, and I imagine this success gives them all sorts of funding for it.

Polygon:

CD Projekt has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide of games in The Witcher franchise, the company announced. The parent company of developer CD Projekt Red gave the number in a document detailing its business strategy.

Last August, the company said that players had purchased 6 million copies of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the latest in the fantasy role-playing game series. Players purchased 4 million of those within the first two weeks of the game’s release last May. The previous game in the series, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, took three months to reach nearly 1 million copies sold in 2011.

CD Projekt Red will release a new expansion for The Witcher 3, called Blood and Wine, later this year. It will also, according to the document, publish “a new type of video game format previously unexplored by the studio.”

CD Projekt neglected to go into details about this other 2016 project. The company did confirm, however, that it is separate from the previously announced Cyberpunk 2077. That game will arrive in 2017 or later, the company said, at least five years after its initial reveal.

Also in the cards for the future — the document details business plans from now until 2021 — is a new role-playing game. In addition, CD Projekt said the CD Projekt Red team will expand to support increased development initiatives “representing new segments.”
