Here’s a collision of worlds that I didn’t see coming. Lucy Liu is directing Luke Cage‘s second season premiere.

The mystery of actress Lucy Liu’s appearance last month on the New York City set of Marvel’s Luke Cage has been solved: The Elementary star is directing the Season 2 premiere of the Netflix drama.

“What a thrill to collaborate with Marvel and Netflix, two industry titans, who paint our world with inspiring stories and beguiling characters,” Liu said in a statement published by BuzzFeed. “It is such an honor to work with such a passionate and fearless team.”
Best known for her roles on such films as Charlie’s Angels and Kill Bill and television series like Elementary and Ally McBeal, Liu branched out into directing in 2011 with Meena. She’s also helmed episodes of Elementary and Graceland.

Liu’s presence in June on the Luke Cage set led to speculation that she would have a guest role on the acclaimed drama.

Premiering in 2018 on Netflix, the 13-episode second season of Luke Cage features returning cast members Mike Colter as Luke Cage, Simone Missick as Misty Knight, Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple, Alfre Woodard as Mariah Dillard and Theo Rossi as Shades, joined by newcomers Mustafa Shakir as John McIver and Gabrielle Dennis as Tilda Johnson.
