Re-Spawn: Paul Jenkins is taking over as writer of ‘Spawn’ with Issue #251

Spawn

What kind of scumbag uses a shit joke that just riffs on a word also in the title? THIS SCUMBAG. After getting pumped that Brian Wood was writing Spawn, I got pretty un-pumped when he announced he left the title over editorial problemz. But now I’m doubling-down on my excitement (and hyphens, and shit puns, and shit heads, and shit holes) now that word of Paul Jenkin’s participation on the title has rocketed out of McFarlane’s gullet.

CBR:

Todd McFarlane took the stage early at the 2015 Image Expo to cap a week of teases with the news that Paul Jenkins would be the next writer of “Spawn.” The comics veteran will be joining previously announced artist Jonboy Meyers starting with the incoming “Spawn: Resurrection” one-shot before taking over the regular series with issue #251.

During Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson’s keynote address, McFarlane joked that Jenkins job on the book would be to make fans wonder why Spawn’s creator had been writing the series for so long.

The news comes after McFarlane teased an Eisner Award-winning writer would take the reins of the book, and Jenkins fits the bill having won the industry honor in 1999 for his work on Marvel’s “Inhumans” with Jae Lee. Since then, Jenkins has worked on a number of Image projects as well – notably a long run on Top Cow’s “The Darkness.” In recent years, the writer has spoken publicly about his choice to step away from work for Marvel and DC Comics and focus on other work, and for a time he was exclusive to his “Deathmatch” publisher BOOM! Studios.

Jenkins replaces Brian Wood as the planned “Spawn” writer, though Wood is sticking with Image Central for other projects as Stephenson also announced his new series “Starve” with Danijel Zezelj and Dave Stewart.

McFarlane’s other big news of the event was “Savior” – a new series with his longtime collaborator Brian Holguin and artist Clayton Crain. The first eight issues of the series are reportedly complete and ready to publish.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
