M. Night Shyamalan’s Next Movie Is An ‘Unbreakable’ Sequel

M. Night Shyamalan’s next movie is going to be that Unbreakable sequel he’s been talking about for fucking *years*, friends.

Den of Geek:

M. Night Shyamalan’s resurgence is moving along nicely. After delivering the low-budget and properly creepy The Visit last year, he returned with another low key horror thriller with Split, starring James McAvoy and Anya Taylor-Joy. Split is a lot of fun, and both leads are tremendous in it, and the movie topped the US box office its opening weekend with a surprising $40 million take.

So, what’s a writer/director who has found his stride again to do? Well, in this case, it might be to finally deliver on the promise to deliver a proper follow up to one of his most popular films. It seems that he’s finally ready to get down to business on Unbreakable 2(title, of course, to be determined). For years, fans were teased with the possibility that he had envisioned Unbreakableas the first piece of a trilogy, but it seemed like it just wasn’t something he was going to get around to. Not anymore!

“I do intend on making [another] Unbreakable movie and I’m intending on doing it next,” Shyamalan told Uproxx. “I’m still close to Bruce [Willis] and everybody…and still in touch with Sam [Jackson] and all that stuff. So, hopefully that becomes a reality very soon.”

[SPOILERS PAST HERE]

Ready? OK, so if you’re still here, I’m going to assume that you’ve seen Split. If not, go see it and don’t read the rest of this!

As we detailed extensively here, Split takes place in the same universe as Unbreakable. The full quote from the Uproxx interview quoted above is that he intends to make “a final Unbreakable film.” In an interview with Den of Geek UK, Shyamalan even explained that the character of “The Horde” was in an early draft of the Unbreakable script, and that the next one “will be a sequel to Unbreakable, but also a sequel to Split.”

So, we’ll get Bruce Willis’ David Dunn, Samuel L. Jackson’s Mr. Glass, and James McAvoy’s Horde all in one movie? We’re in for that. Hopefully there’s room for Anya Taylor-Joy, as well.
