[Interview] Benjamin Santiago – OL `XCLUSIVE!

May 2nd, 2012 by Rendar Frankenstein

Every now and then a human being is born unto the Earth who has ability beyond the natural. Wielding these transcendent powers, this individual has the ability to do that which most cannot even fathom. Good? Evil? Artist? Warrior? All that’s known for sure when one of these folks drops in is that things are going to change.

I was afforded the distinct pleasure of interviewing Benjamin Santiago, an artist doing the dirty work for those of us who were raised on Super Nintendo and science fiction. This is the dude behind a wonder-trove of visual delights, FANTOMA.ORG, and a slew of ill videos.

Hit the jump and check out this feature with Benjamin Santiago. Not only did he answer all of my wacky questions, but he also made an OL EXCLUSIVE VIDEO!

‘Banksy of Bulgaria’ Turns Statues of Russian Soldiers Into Superheroes.

June 20th, 2011 by Caffeine Powered

There’s a good lad with the nickname  Banksy of Bulgaria. Said Bulgarian Banksy recently turned “Russian Red Army soldiers from a monument in the city of Sofia, in Bulgaria, into popular superheroes and cartoon characters.”

Pretty rad, if I suppose, vandalistic stuff.

Hit the jump for pictures and details.

Berlin Street Artists Build Kaleidoscopes To Block Subway Ads.

March 8th, 2011 by Caffeine Powered

The future is happening all around us, and we have no fucking idea! Take Berlin. Apparently in Berlin, they’ve eschewed print advertisements in subway stations for projectors to display their ads. In response, a group of Berlin street artists build giant kaleidoscopes to place over said projectors. Take the power back! Or at least the uh, sanctity (?) of subway walls. The minds behind the gag explain:

A couple of months ago, ad-projectors appeared in a Berlin subway station, throwing moving images all over the station walls and lifting visual aggressiveness to a new level. Since the images were projected, we could get between projector and projection to fight this new quality of exaggerated advertisement with its own weapons. Minimalinvasive adbusting devices made of mirrors, magnets and quite some ducktape.

It’s pretty bad ass.

Hit the jump to see them pull it off.

More Banksy In Los Angeles; Rat Time In Taco Land.

February 26th, 2011 by Caffeine Powered

Banksy  continues  frolicking along in Los Angeles. His latest work went up alongside some taco joint in Oceanside. According to Hypebeast, “the piece came as a surprise to most, including the shop owner, who contemplated painting the piece over before he noticed the attention its received.”

If you enter into the comments section at Hypebeast, there’s a good three-thousand comments debating whether or not its actual Banksy. I have no fucking clue. I love how the aura of Banksy is so pervasive, his influence permeates throughout boundaries regardless of whether or not this handiwork is courtesy of his agency. The Banksy! He lives. He replicates. Or he doesn’t. But he still does.

It’s late man, I don’t know what I’m saying.

Hit the jump for the work.

Street Art Group Trusto Corp Humorously Points Out How Dumb We Are

October 25th, 2010 by Caffeine Powered

I first came across Trusto Corp over at Super Punch, and spent the good part of Saturday following them across the web via links and references. Oh, hypertextuality! Let me tell you something. Everything is definitely probably interconnected. What the fuck is Trusto Corp, exactly? According to dailyDuJour, they’re a street art collective that debuted last year at Miami’s Art Basel. And over the weekend, Trusto put on a show at Gallery1988 in Los Angeles. Now, I’m a fat, dorky kid who sits in a basement, and doesn’t live in the chic metropolis of Los Angeles. However, thanks to the power of the internet (and Super Punch, and dailyDuJour, and Gallery1988), I was able to check out their work.

It’s amazing, humorous, and painfully correct.

Corp subversively leverages American consumption through the manipulation of our good old leviathan known as Marketing. They riff on familiar feeling logos, such as “Tide” and despite typing this in my Gap jeans, while sipping a chemically-soaked soda, I was amused. While all too aware of how shitty I am. Or we are. Or maybe we aren’t. Whatever, I chuckled.

Hit the jump for more of Corp’s work from their show “New Americana” at Gallery1988, and if you’re in Los Angeles, hit it up for me.
