‘Pacific Rim: Uprising’ Trailer: The Apocalypse Is Replaced With The Power Rangers

Man, not fucking feeling this trailer at all, dude. The palette is a vomitorium of bombastically bright hues. John Boyega’s cheap Idris Elba impression falls flat. The designs of the mechs suck. Entire thing feels like Power Rangers, but with kaiju or some shit. I don’t know. I hope I’m wrong.

The Verge:

Earlier this summer at San Diego Comic-Con, we got our first, brief glimpse of Pacific Rim Uprising, in the form of a viral recruitment video for the Jager Corps. Now we have the movie’s first trailer, which shows off John Boyega’s new character, Jake Pentecost, and plenty of giant robot action.

The trailer shows off a slew of new Jaegers mechs, as well as returning cast members like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Charlie Day (reprising his role as the uniquely enthusiastic Dr. Newton Geiszler). But the trailer also sets this up as a film that will hand things off from the last generation of heroes to the next one, with Boyega’s character taking up the mantle of his father, played by Idris Elba in the previous film.

Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 film Pacific Rim followed Charlie Hunnam, Elba, and Rinko Kikuchi as they fought against otherworldly monsters by piloting giant robots. The film was a modest success at the box office, and while a sequel was initially greenlit, it was later postponed. Del Toro eventually dropped out of the project and was replaced by Daredevil’s Steven S. DeKnight, with the film finally landing on a 2018 release date.

Pacific Rim Uprising hits theaters on March 23rd, 2018. If audiences are interested in seeing the trailer on the big screen, it’s playing with some showings of Blade Runner 2049 this weekend.
