The Coen Brothers writing a movie about the Silk Road and Dark Web

Fuck yeah! What’s cooler than a movie about the Dark Web? Cooler than a movie about the Silk Road, which was a haven for bitcoin boners and drug sales? A movie pertaining to all that good shit, which is being written by the Coen Brothers.

The Verge:

There have been a lot of not-so-great movies about hackers and cybersecurity lately. But there’s a glimmer of hope that we could soon have a good one: the Coen brothers have signed on to help script Dark Web, a film about the notorious online drug market Silk Road and the man who ran it, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

It’s not clear precisely how involved the Coens are. It sounds like a draft of the film was already written, and it wasn’t stated whether the Coens will be starting from scratch or simply revising what’s already there.

It’s a good sign for the movie either way — some Coen scripts are better than others, but they’re pretty much all acclaimed — but one option would certainly be better than the other.

Dark Web is based on a twopart Wiredfeature, from 2015, called The Rise and Fall of Silk Road. It’s an in-depth look at the investigation into Silk Road, and making things even more interesting, it happens to profile an investigator who was stealing bitcoin, selling secret information, and generally deceiving the government throughout the investigation. He also sold his story to 20th Century Fox for $240,000 to be turned into this movie.

The project still appears to be in early stages, so there’s no word on a director yet or when the studio is hoping to have it finished.
