‘Luke Cage’ Trailer: Bulletproof, Devastating Jaw Bones

UPROXX:

There’s already been a lot of talk regarding Netflix’s Luke CageLike Jessica Jones and Daredevil before it, the newest series in the Netflix Marvel Universewill be gritty and raw and from the newly released trailer, it doesn’t disappoint. They use ODB’s “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” in the trailer, so that tells you a lot about the tone the show is looking to strike. The producers of Luke Cage are well aware of the current discussions about race in America, so at San Diego Comic-Con creator Cheo Hodari Coker talked with Entertainment Weekly about why Luke Cage is the hero that our country needs right now. He stated,

“There’s never been a time in history where having a bulletproof black man, in terms of just looking at how that affects a neighborhood, in terms of looking at, for example, how it not only changes law enforcement but also changes the criminal world, and really in a sense, it’s like Luke’s entrance into this world changes the ecology of the entire neighborhood.”

Marvel Television executive vice president Jeph Loeb agreed with Coker aboutLuke Cage and the importance a black superhero is at this time. Loeb gave a slightly botched history lesson regarding Luke Cage stating, “for all intents and purposes Cage was the first black superhero.” Cage made his debut in 1972, but it was Marvel’s Black Panther and Falcon (both in 1969) who preceded Cage.

Mike Colter – who previously played Luke Cage on Jessica Jones – told EW that the culture and flavor of Luke Cage will be slightly different because of its Harlem location, also saying that there’s a “certain musicality to it.” Luke Cage in all of its gritty glory will hit Netflix on September 30th.
