Today, Sony Czar Tom Rothman confirmed that a Spider-Man Universe is in their plans, and they also plan on continuing their relationship with Marvel. Which, you know, is pretty fucking obvious.

CBR:

Sony Pictures will continue to make theirs Marvel. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Chairman Tom Rothmanpraised the studio’s partnership with Marvel Studios, teased what’s in store for Spider-Man’s future and more.

Asked point-blank if Sony planned for a Spider-Man universe and more work with Marvel, Rothman said, “Yes to both those questions. It’s been fantastic, our relationship with Marvel.”

“Sony has the ultimate authority,” he explained, “But we have deferred the creative lead to Marvel, because they know what they’re doing. We start shooting the new ‘Spider-Man’ in Atlanta [in mid-June].”

As to whether or not Sony will trim the cost of the franchise, he explained, “I don’t want to trim costs. I want to make money. And sometimes you make money by trimming costs and sometimes by investing in things that are profitable. A movie like ‘Spider-Man’ by Marvel, that’s not inexpensive. But it’s a great investment. Knowing that Marvel has such a clear, creative vision, I sleep very well at night.”

He also weighed in on the upcoming animated “Spider-Man” film. “We have dated Christmas 2018 for what I believe is truly going to be a breakthrough animated sensation,” he shared. “[Phil] Lord and [Chris] Miller, who did the ‘LEGO’ movies, are doing an animated ‘Spider-Man.’ And it has a very breakthrough look to it, and a fantastic story, and it’s independent from our Marvel Spider-Man.”

Directed by Jon Watts and starring Tom Holland as Spider-Man/Peter Parker and Marisa Tomeias Aunt May, “Spider-Man: Homecoming” is scheduled for release on July 7, 2017.
