Ridley Scott and Syfy making ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ miniseries sequel

2001.

Apparently Syfy is totally serious about being totally serious about producing dope content. The channel has doubled down on the acknowledgement that they’ve been fucking up for a while now (SO SAY WE ALL), and is going about addressing that development with new promising series. The latest announcement? A miniseries sequel to 2001.

Gizmodo:

Great news for Arthur C. Clarke and/or Ridley Scott fans (in other words, everyone). The Blade Runner and Alien director just signed on to produce a Syfy Channel miniseries version of Clarke’s 2001 sequel, 3001: The Final Odyssey.

Based on the 1997 novel of the same name, 3001 picks up with Dr. Frank Poole, who is awoken from his deep freeze 1000 years after HAL-9000’s infamous little pod-bay door temper tantrum. After being revived by “a comet-collecting space tug named the Goliath,” Poole is ultimately returned back to a wildly changed Earth. According to Slashfilm:

Some of its notable features include the BrainCap, a brain-computer interface technology; genetically-engineered dinosaur servants; a space drive; and four gigantic space elevators located evenly around the Equator. Human beings have also colonised the Jovian moons Ganymede and Callisto. TMA-1, the black monolith found on the Moon in 1999, has been brought to Earth in 2006 and installed in front of the United Nations Building in New York City.

And you’ll all be happy to hear that the estates of both original director Stanley Kubrick and Clarke have thrown their full support behind the project, although whether or not that means any actual family-related involvement remains to be seen. We won’t have too long to wait, though—the miniseries should be debuting sometime in 2015.

Has anyone read 3001? I haven’t engaged any of 2001’s sequel material. I’m curious though.
