The Dude’s High 5s: Top 5 Quotable Movies

Walking around and making dumb ass movie references is one of our most sacred American traditions.   Be it children running around pretending to be the characters themselves to adults wishing to convey a complex scenario with just a few words, quotes are embedded in our everyday lives.   I don’t know about you, but I take comfort in that.

5. Monty Python and the Holy Grail

I feel like I should turn in my geek card when I say that it took me a very long time to like this movie.   It wasn’t until I started to watch some of the old Flying Circus stuff that I started to get it.   Then one day this movie cam on Comedy Central and it clicked.   This WAS funny.   I got it.   When people would exclaim “Just a flesh wound!” if they got hurt, or claiming they already found a holy grail, or even wondering if coconuts migrate.

4. Jaws

I have always loved Jaws.   Despite the fact that I saw it when I was very young and didn’t have the ability to reason that sharks could not get me at night, I still liked it.   As I grew older, the movie always held up.   Then I noticed that some of the quotes from the movie started to enter my lexicon.   From “We’re gonna need a bigger boat.” To “Everybody out of the water!”   Hell, even the theme of “Duhhh na.   Duhhhh nuh na” is quotable.

3. Caddyshack

Shame on you if you haven’t imitated this scene.   Between great lines delivered by Billy Murray, Rodney Dangerfield, Ted Knight, and Chevy Chase it’s hard to pick a favorite quote.   This will remain one of my favorite movies to quote until I lay on my death bed and I receive total consciousness … so I got that going for me.

2. Major League

This is all about Bob Ueker.   Every word the hall of famer says is golden.   I can’t do him justice.   Just watch the clip for god’s sake.   I even bought the MLB radio package to listen to Brewers games because of him.   $15 well spent.

1. The Big Lebowski

This is a complicated choice, lots of in, lots of outs.   If my chosen namesake doesn’t clue you into the fact that I love this movie, then you need to pay attention more.   If a day goes by that I don’t quote this movie, you can rest assured that I didn’t speak.   Every single line is applicable to everyday life.   Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna go find a cash machine.

So what wondrous pieces of cinema do you folks out there find yourself repeating whether or not people get them.   (P.S. Yes I did consider Star Wars, it shames me to say that I find myself quoting that less and less as the years pass by.)
